Akhil Jobanputra has been learning North Indian Classical Vocal Music since the age of 3. Under the guidance of many teachers such as Dr. Amit Arya, Neeraja Aptikar, Asha Lohia, Pandit Sanjeev Abhyankar, and Sangeet Martand PadmaVibhushan Pandit Jasraj ji, Akhil has learnt a variety of vocal skills.
Currently, Akhil trains under Pandit Sanjeev Abhyankar and Pandit Jasraj ji.
He has had the honour to perform at numerous events around Canada, the US, and India. One of his most notable performances being at the Pandit Motiram Pandit Maniram Sangeet Samaroha in Hyderabad, India. Akhil has also had the privilege of accompanying his Guru, Pandit Jasraj ji at multiple events such as the Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav in Pune, India. He recently completeted his first concerts in the US, in New Jersey and Los Angeles.
Akhil has been awarded the prestigious 'Mewati Pradeept', 'Mewati Deepak', and 'Mewati Deepankur' from the Pandit Jasraj Institute of Music in New York. He is also the recipient of the 'Times of Canada Community Excellence Award - Arts & Culture Category'.
Teaching for the past 5 years in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, Akhil is known for his diverse approach to meeting individualistic needs whether it is voice culture, knowledge of the raagas, history, theory, etc. He has taught students varying from the ages of 4 years to 75 years old.
Akhil is also the founder and president of ICMSV - Indian Classical Music Society of Vancouver.
Imbibing characteristics of the Mewati, Kirana, and Gwalior Gharanas, Akhil has developed a spiritual and personal approach to the production of sound. His training in Tabla also allows him to combine the elements of melody and rhythm together through 'layakaari'.
Akhil is now a second year student at the University of British Columbia. He is the Vice-President Academic for the Arts Undergraduate Society at UBC and aims to expand the love for Indian classical music at his university.
